Other Information

Training Support: An inventive mind will be an asset to the new owner with a flair to try things their own way. The fun is that it will not be boring! One of the best things about these old stoves is that even now, with all his experience he will find something totally new and unexpected – but that’s engineering! Len is currently working on an operational manual to assist a new owner with the methods required to handle the different makes and models of cookers and heaters. New welding techniques for old castings, new boilers, improved firebox components and better materials have all been introduced. Len believes that after the initial assistance period an on-going weekly 4 hour support and training commitment by himself will ensure that the new owner up to speed very quickly. During this time he will also work with the new owner to ensure that all compliance status is transferred. Hi name is on the door – so he wants to make sure the transfer is successful for everyone involved.
Market Outlook: Many solid fuel wood stoves are still in working order. People love to use their stoves to cook food or heat their homes and are reluctant to give up their wood stove for any type of modern convenience. Although built to last normal wear and tear requires that components require replacement and/or repair. That’s where Len Friend Heating comes in handy! Established in 1978 the business has specialised in rebuilding and repairs of solid fuel cookers. It’s not a large operation that restores stoves on an assembly line but rather each stove is personally attended to by Mr. Friend and does not leave the premise until it has passed the high quality standards that he insists on. He recreates stoves that are not decorations or curios but for everyday use in his clients home. With the exception of the finish enamelling, all assembly work is done at Len Friend Heating. Len project manages the job and farms out work to Spiroloc (located next door to Len Friend Heating) who make flues and parts for the rebuilds when required. Pride in the work completed has meant that a loyal and trustworthy client base has been developed who look nowhere else but Len Friend Heating. Len would be the first to admit that it is time to let someone else, with a passion for beginning and ending a project the chance to build on the business. With good machinery, sheetmetal, welding and tooling equipment the opportunity exists to grow the business with the security of owning the building. The business would suit a prospective buyer looking for the security of their own employment and keen to enjoy recreating products loved by their owners. Len Friend Heating is a working owner business operating from its own premises situated at 39 Barton Street, Woolston, Christchurch.
Reason Selling: Len is looking to retire. The stoves seem to be getting heavier and time is much more important than money right now. Someone else is catching the fish and he feels it should be him! Len understands that the transition of the business will require assistance from him over the next 12 months (if required) to ensure that the new owner is able to complete the compliance aspects of the rebuilds. Making the decision to sell now will enable that assistance to be readily available to a buyer.
Expansion Potential: Growth has not been primary objective of Len but there does exist opportunities for business growth for any new owner. Solid fuel stoves and heaters are still a popular choice for people in a variety of different roles. Repairs and Maintenance of existing Solid Fuel Appliances No permits are required for repair of existing compliant solid fuel appliances as removal, refitting or upgrading that does not change the model or type does not constitute an installation and consequently no council involvement is required. Second Hand Solid Fuel Appliances All solid fuel appliances need to comply with the air emission regulations and second hand models will not be acceptable unless they have actually been tested and pass the emission tests. Appliances will have to be inspected by a suitably qualified person and shown to be safe and of sound construction and compliant with NZS 7421, NZS 7401 (AS/NZS 3869) and (AS/NZS 2918). Second hand models are therefore more suitable for rural properties larger than 2 hectares in size where air emissions are not considered. The majority of current customers of Len Friend Heating are domiciled in the rural area. Solid fuel appliances offer alternatives when electricity is cut and a ready supply of wood stocks are available for burning. They are an important necessity for areas prone to bad winter weather. Summer Use of Solid Fuel Cookers Outside this winter period, you can use an inside open fire or solid fuel appliance providing you use dry wood with a moisture content of less than 25%. A growing trend has been to utilises “open fireplaces” for evening entertainment and as established bar-be-que ovens. The growth of garden (pizza) ovens has encouraged people to enjoy solid fuel cookers outdoors rather than in. Historic Homes Restoration of historic homes, such as the Oamaru Heritage Trust, are also areas that emission regulations do not apply. Being the only restorer in the South Island has enabled Len Friend Heating to create a niche market with these organisations.
